"Waugh!" Alexander cried. "No more! Make the little monster shut up!" Joey moaned. The baby went on for about an hour more. Joey eventually gave up on going back to sleep, instead she got up and headed out of the vociferous house. Meanwhile at the Leery's, someone else couldn't sleep either. Dawson couldn't help replaying Pacey's words in his head. Joey? In love with him? Not a chance. But somehow he couldn't deny the fact that he felt different toward her these days. But Joey's his best friend. Why would he feel this way toward her? His pondering was broken by a voice. "Dawson?" "Yeah. That you Jo?" Dawson replied with a hint of anxiety in his voice. "The one and only. Can I crash here for the night?" "Sure, come on in." Joey apprehensively climbed in the window and trudged over to Dawson's bed. Just as her head hit the pillow, she fell to the peaceful serenity of slumber. Dawson couldn't help but gaze admiringly into her face. He kissed her on the forehead and tucked her into his arms. He breathed in the sweet aroma of her hair and fell asleep lying next to Joey. The next morning Joey awoke in the arms of Dawson. I've got to get out of here, she thought. But he looks so adorable and calm while he's asleep. Alright maybe just ten more minutes here, she convinced herself. "BEEP, BEEP, BEEP" the alarm made a deafening noise. Joey and Dawson woke at the same moment. They both reached to turn off the ear-shattering siren (Dawson had to lean over Joey to reach his nightstand where the alarm lies). Dawson was tempted to kiss her right then and there. Even though she had just woken up, she still looked gorgeous. He immediately shook the thought away. Then it dawned on him, today was Sunday. Why was his alarm set on a Sunday? "Dawson, who in their right mind would set their alarm to go off on a Sunday. Oops, I forgot who I was talking to." "Hey, don't look at me." "I plead guilty on all charges," a voice said as it entered the room. "Man, Pace what were you thinking?" Dawson asked his best bud. "We, us three, are going to have a day full of fun together, just like old times," Pacey replied. "I've got everything ready so you can't say no." He holds up a picnic basket. "Alright," Joey said while rolling her eyes. The three were just about ready to leave when Doug, Pacey's brother, calls. "Sorry guys, looks like this threesome must become a twosome. For I have a date with dear old Grandma Parker," Pacey informed them sarcastically. "Thanks for nothing Pace," Dawson said. "Hey man don't get me wrong here I would much rather spend a day with you two than with 'Nannie'. Look on the bright side, you can keep all the things I packed for us," Pacey informed them with a mischievous grin. Pacey walks off toward his own house rather quickly. "Well, shall we?" Dawson says as he extends his arm. "All right," Joey replies rather reluctantly. They walked down a rather secluded path in the woods until they came to a grassy open field. As the two walked they discussed school activities they were both in and little things like why everyone at school seemed to be obsessed with the opposite sex. "This is the perfect spot," Dawson said as they walked through the field. "Yeah it's really pretty," Joey said. "Yeah it is," Dawson replied, not referring to the landscape but to Joey. With that they proceeded to lay out the picnic that had been packed for them. The lunch consisted of chicken salad sandwiches, a bag of potato chips, cole slaw, two cans of Pepsi, and apple pie for dessert. Geez, Pacey must've put some thought into this, Dawson thought. He couldn't help but think that this was all a set up to get Joey and himself alone. He grinned at the thought and then scolded himself for thinking that way. Joey couldn't help but notice Dawson grinning. He's probably thinking about Jen and how much more fun it would be if Jen was there instead of her. Dawson finally broke the silence,"So uh what do you wanna do?" "I don't know. You?" Joey stammered. Why was she so nervous? This was Dawson, her best friend since she was little. There was no reason for her to feel this way, right? "Well, Pacey packed a portable player and some CD's. Care to have a little fun?" he said as he clicked on the music. "I would be honored," Joey replied acting very dignified but trying not to laugh. The CD playing was the Grease soundtrack and the first song was "Summer Nights". The two threw a frisbee, that they had found in the basket, around and danced a little while the song played. Their fun was broken by the next song, "Hopelessly Devoted to You." "Well uh do you uh wanna dance?" Dawson asked rather timidly. "Sure I guess," Joey answered, her voice shaking. Dawson pulled her in close to his body. He sighed and thought about how perfect this all was, just him and Joey. Joey felt as if she was floating on air. Their silent romance was pulled to a halt when all of a sudden the music stopped playing. Joey tried to pull away but Dawson wouldn't let her. They exchanged a loving stare that was the most intense Joey had ever felt. "Uh-huh," a voice cracked the serenity of the moment. Dawson's gaze shifted from Joey's eyes to the figure standing on the horizon. "Fancy meeting you here," Pacey said with a rather cynical tone. Pacey was standing about thirty feet away and was holding the hand of Jen. "Yeah it is rather perplexing that we both bring our dates to the same spot," Dawson said to Pacey while inflicting a smoldering stare in Jen's direction. And with that Joey turned and ran toward the woods. "Joey wait!" Dawson yelled. Dawson ran her down in no time flat. "Explain Joey. Now!" "Look I told you I can't and that all of this is really confusing. I had a great time today, but now I see it was just to bide your time until she got here. Thanks for nothing," Joey stuttered while she was trying to hold back tears. "Whoa, wait a minute," he said grabbing Joey's arm, "I didn't set this up but I do know this, I had a great time too." Dawson's eyes burned into Joey's like fire. "Look, I better head back. Bessie's probably furious that I haven't come home at all," Joey replied trying to sound cool to counteract the passion growing inside of her. "Walk you to school tomorrow then?" "You know it," Joey said with a smile.
