It was about 4:30am when Dawson decided to get up. He couldn't help but
think of how hurt Joey looked yesterday when Jen showed up. He had to tell
her how he felt and then maybe she would open up more. There I go again
thinking about Joey. What's with me these days? Dawson tried to make
himself look at least half decent and he climbed out his bedroom window.
He had to think and he knew just where to go.
Joey woke up thinking about Dawson. As she looked at her watch she
realized only about 4:45am, and now she couldn't go back to sleep now that
the little terrorist that slept next to her was awake. She decided to get
up and get an early start. As she pulled on a white spaghetti strap top
with mini daisies on it, she couldn't help but think of him. His eyes
yesterday were so loving. She cursed herself for being an idiot and
running off like that. She'd been so stupid and she didn't even know why
Dawson was still her best friend. She had basically driven Jen away from
him, ruined his family, and now possibly ruined their relationship. Well,
she told herself, I might as well not be here when he comes to get me.
I'll tell him I had to go early for some homework or something. She pulled
on a black cardigan and slammed the door on her way out. She had to go to
think and she knew just the place.
Dawson sat on a stump and gazed into the water. He was hidden in case the
old miser came. He heard a rustle of leaves and ducked closer into the
bushes. It was Joey. What was she doing here, he thought. He watched for
awhile, not saying anything. He watched her sit down on a bench and start
thinking aloud.
"God Dawson, why do you make it so hard for me to not fall in love with
you."
Dawson tried to contain his excitement to conceal his cover. Joey loved
him and he loved Joey, what could be more perfect. He contemplated whether
or not to tell Joey his true feelings for her. The answer was obvious and
by the time he had rehearsed what he was going to say, Joey was gone.
Where did she go? Probably to school. He jumped up and walked slowly to
school, all the while thinking of his situation with Joey.
As Joey walked into the deserted school, she saw a huge poster advertising
the last dance of the year which was to be held on Friday. Great, she
thought, just another chance for Dawson and Jen to go together. Oh well, I
guess this year has to come to some kind of tragic end, at least for me
anyway. Joey opened a door and walked in.
Dawson literally ran to the school. He burst in the school's front door
and started yelling Joey's name. No answer. He looked in the library. No
Joey. He looked by her locker. No Joey. He was just about to give up when
a door creaked open.
"Dawson?" a timid voice called.
"Joey? Is that you?" Dawson yelled from the halls, his voice echoing.
"Of course it's me. Now just go away. I know you'll always love Jen so
just spare me the run around," she called out from somewhere in the
building.
"Look Joey, just go to the dance with me and I promise I'll explain
everything. So will you?" Dawson pleaded, trying to find the source of the
voice.
"Only if you promise it's not going to be like last time, a hopeless guilt
trip," Joey answered.
"Alright," Dawson replied, smiling at the mental picture of Joey and him
dancing, "Now come out, please."
"You have to find me first," Joey teased.
Dawson ran down the hall, following the sound of her voice. He came to the
girls' restroom. Nah, she couldn't be in there, he told himself. But he's
looked everywhere else. He braced himself for any possible screams and
ducked in the door.
"Looks like you found me out."
"Well hello to you too," Dawson said with a devilish grin.
"Look I better head back home for my stuff. I kinda didn't have time to
grab it before I left. By the way, how did you know I was here?"
"Uh, would you believe process of elimination?" Dawson said trying to not
give away where he really saw her.
"Yeah sure Dawson, whatever. Really."
"It's kinda hard to explain. You see I...went to the ruin this morning to
think and..."
"You saw me and didn't say anything?" Joey said, trying not to sound mad.
"No I...I saw you walking toward the school and I thought you might be in
some kind of trouble so I followed you. I yelled for you but I guess you
didn't hear me," Dawson said hoping she'd buy the story.
"Oh, I see."
"Can I walk with you?" Dawson said, appearing very hopeful.
"Come on."
They walked hand in hand towards Joey's house. It was only 7:00am and they
had plenty of time to kill before school started. As they neared Joey's
house Dawson offered to come in with her.
"Why?"
"I need to ask your sister something very important."
A very bewildered Joey then opened the screen door and before yelling for
her sister, she checked to see if the monster was asleep. Of course he
wasn't so she called for Bessie.
"Hold on a sec Jo!" Bessie called from the back room, " What is it
anyway?"
"Dawson wants to ask you something!" Joey hollered.
Bessie emerged two minutes later fully dressed and even with makeup on.
"Well what is it Dawson?" she asked.
"It would be an honor and give me great pleasure if Josephine Potter would
accompany me to the school dance," Dawson said in a very dignified tone.
"And why are you asking me this?" Bessie asked in a rather perplexed tone.
"Because a gentleman always asks the permission of his fair lady's
guardian before escorting her to a social function."
Joey look at Dawson as if he were from outer space. "What brought about
this Middle Age act?" Joey inquired.
"I'm just trying to do this the right way," Dawson replied.
"Of course Dawson," Bessie said as she gave Joey a knowing look.
"Let's just go Dawson," Joey said as she grabbed her bookbag and they
walked out the door together.
"Bye Bessie and thanks!" Dawson yelled.
"Your welcome!"
As they walked around the creek towards Dawson's house he said, "I need to
get my books as well. Care to join me?"
"Might as well."
When they arrived at Dawson's he told her to wait outside. "I've got to
get something," he told her. He emerged from the house carrying a daisy
along with his bookbag. Dawson had thought of the daisy after seeing what
Joey was wearing. This would look great in her hair, he thought.
Joey was fiddling around with her shoe laces as Dawson came out of his
house. She saw what he was holding and immediately thought of Jen. Well,
there goes my chance at even having him. That little New Yorker girl still
has him wrapped around her little finger even though they've broken up,
Joey thought in great disgust.
"For you mademoiselle," Dawson said with great flare, interrupting Joey's
thoughts.
"For me?" Joey said with great surprise.
"Who else would I give this to?" Dawson asked. "Here allow me." He then
cut the stem to the right length, pushed back her hair, and placed the
daisy ever so gently behind Joey's ear. "Magnifico!"
The two shared an intense gaze that only lasted a few seconds but could
have melted an iceberg.
"Thanks. It's still early. Care to have a bite to eat?" Joey asked, still
getting over the intensity of Dawson's eyes.
"Don't mind if I do."
They talked over pancakes that Joey had made and fresh squeezed orange
juice. Then there was a knock at the door. Dawson got up to go answer t
and Joey followed.
"Are you Dawson Leery?" the man at the door asked.
"Yes sir. And you are?"
"I'm a representative for the Boston Film Festival and I'm here to
congratulate you on your superb entry that has won "Best Picture" and
"Best Screenplay." The Board would like to honor you and the other winners
at a banquet this Friday night. Can you be there?" the man asked.
Dawson turned to Joey and said, "Isn't that the night of the dance?"
"Yeah, but you need to go to Boston for the banquet. I'll find someone
else to go with," Joey said, with a hint of disappointment in her voice.
"She can always come along. I mean most people bring their significant
others. By the way, you look familiar to me. Have we met before?" the man
asked Joey.
"I don't think so but I was in Dawson's movie," Joey said with a smile.
"That's where it was. I believe that settles it then. But would you mind
telling me if you know where Jennifer Lindley or Pacey Witter lives?" the
man questioned.
"Yeah. Jen lives right next door and Pacey lives about five doors down.
Why?" Dawson replied.
"Jennifer won "Best Supporting Actress" and Pacey won "Best Actor," the
man said, "Thank you for your time and here are your tickets. Please be
there by at least 6:30pm."
As the man walked away Dawson said, "Well if that wasn't weird. I mean the
odds of me winning anything were slim to none. And I won. Never in my life
did I expect this."
"Well congratulations Dawson!" Joey said. It took all of her willpower to
not kiss him.
"I couldn't have done any of this without you. You know that right?"
Dawson said, pulling her closer.
"Dawson you're fooling yourself. You've never really needed me. I'm just
along for the ride," Joey said trying to avoid Dawson's smoldering stare.
"Now you know that's not true. You're my better half, my inspiration, my
everything. Joey what I'm trying to say is..." Dawson stopped because he
thought if he went on he would hurt Joey. "I...you're my best friend. I
couldn't possibly fathom life without you."
"What are you trying to say Dawson?"
"What I'm trying to say is that I'm in love with you Jo. I always have
been but I've just been to stupid to see it," Dawson said, hoping for the
best reaction possible from the beautiful face he was staring into.
"I love you too. I would have waited for eternity just to hear you say
that," Joey said rejoicing.
"You do? I didn't think you felt that way towards me. Oh god Joey," Dawson
pulled her in close and tilted her chin up with his hand.
"That's the problem with you Dawson Leery, always thinking," Joey said.
They embraced in a warm, passionate kiss until the doorbell rang.
"Don't bother with the door," Dawson said in between kisses. He led her up
to his room and told her to find her bikini that she'd left over there
from the past summer.
"Where are we going?"
"We are going to skip school and go to the beach."
"What are you up to?" Joey said with a little skepticism.
"I'm going to rent a boat and we're going sailing. You up to that?"
"Anything just to be with you," Joey leaned over a kissed Dawson on
thelips.
Dawson kissed back and thought how everything had changed between him and
Joey but somehow he didn't really care. His thoughts were interrupted by
the doorbell again. He pulled away reluctantly. He told her he'd be right
back. He went downstairs to answer the door and...
